In recent years, atmospheric rivers massive bands of water vapor in the atmosphere have increasingly come under the spotlight as a key driver of extreme weather, particularly floods. These storms, sometimes called “flying rivers,” are formed when warm ocean water evaporates, creating a concentrated, invisible river of moisture that moves from tropical areas toward cooler latitudes. When this moisture reaches land, it can result in heavy rainfall or snow, depending on the climate, often causing devastating floods or avalanches.
What Are Atmospheric Rivers?
Atmospheric rivers are responsible for about 90% of the water vapor that moves across the Earth’s mid-latitudes. These rivers in the sky can be massive, typically stretching over 2,000 kilometers long and 500 kilometers wide. As the Earth’s climate continues to warm, these atmospheric rivers are becoming more frequent and intense, posing a growing threat to regions around the world, including India.
According to a 2023 study, India experienced 574 atmospheric rivers between 1951 and 2020 during the monsoon season (June to September). The warming of the Indian Ocean has played a significant role in their formation, with scientists noting that nearly 80% of India’s most severe atmospheric rivers in the last two decades were linked to floods.
Impact on India’s Monsoon
India relies heavily on its monsoon season for agriculture and water resources, but the country has been witnessing more erratic weather patterns in recent years. Atmospheric rivers contribute to this unpredictability, as they intensify the rainfall in short bursts. This has led to several extreme flooding events. In fact, seven of India’s ten worst floods between 1985 and 2020 were tied to these phenomena.
The increasing moisture in the atmosphere from global warming is likely to make these storms more frequent and severe. According to Dr. Roxy Matthew Koll, an atmospheric scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, atmospheric rivers are now responsible for short, intense periods of rainfall that can trigger flash floods and landslides, especially in mountainous regions.

Atmospheric rivers are not unique to India. They occur in other parts of the world as well, causing extreme weather events. For example, in April 2023, countries like Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, and Jordan experienced severe flooding due to an atmospheric river. Similarly, Chile and Australia have also faced destructive floods in recent years due to these storms.
Need for More Research and Preparedness
While atmospheric rivers have been extensively studied in regions like North America and East Asia, the phenomenon remains relatively understudied in South Asia. This gap in understanding makes it crucial for India to invest in more research to better predict and manage the impact of these storms. Enhanced satellite tracking and better collaboration among meteorologists, hydrologists, and climate scientists are essential to understanding their full effect on India’s weather patterns.
As climate change accelerates, atmospheric rivers are expected to become more intense, putting millions of people at risk of extreme weather. Recognizing their growing role in India’s monsoon season is critical to preparing for future floods and mitigating their impact.
