The longstanding relationship between India and Bangladesh has encountered a turbulent phase following recent developments along their shared border. Tensions escalated when Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commissioner was summoned by Indian authorities in response to ongoing concerns and incidents near the border.
The issue came to the forefront after the fall of Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, 2024. Reports emerged of individuals associated with Bangladesh’s Awami League party and Bangladeshi citizens attempting unauthorised crossings into Indian territories. These incidents have raised significant security concerns on both sides of the border. One of the most disturbing incidents was the discovery of the deceased Awami League leader Ishfaq Ali Khan Panna’s body in Meghalaya, near the Indo-Bangladesh border. Speculation surrounds his death, with suspicions suggesting political rivalries may have played a role.
Dhaka’s response to these developments was conveyed through Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin, who addressed the matter with Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma. This diplomatic engagement followed accusations by Bangladeshi Adviser on Home Affairs Jehangir Alam Chowdhury, who alleged that India had initiated construction of fences at five border locations without prior consultation with Bangladesh authorities. This unilateral action prompted Bangladesh to summon the Indian envoy for urgent discussions on the situation.
