Mumbai – The city of dreams collapsed due to heavy dust,rains and strong winds.  A hoarding of 120ft height and 250 tons of weight fell near the CNG pump in patna nagar off the  chedda nagar junction in Ghatkopar , Mumbai. This incident   took place on 13th may 2024 , around 4 pm resulting in taking away the lives of 14 people and 75 people are being injured and some individuals conditions are yet to be known. The injured people were taken to the nearby hospitals and majoritu of the patients are admitted in Rajawadi hospital at vidyavihar. However these heavy winds also caused a lot of damage to another part of the city by affecting the suburban central railway services between thane and mulund. These diplomatic weather conditions severly disruprted the road  and airport operations in the city. This also disturbed the services in Chatrapati shivaji maharaj international airport which is the busiest aiport in the asia.

What officials are saying about the incident?

  • The chief minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde , after looking into the destruction said "it was an unfortunate incident" and announced 5lakhs for the families of the deceased  as well as the free treatment for the people who got injuredand also ordered to BMC to look into all the hoardings  in the Mumbai and conduct the audit regarding the hoardings in order to narrow the chances of the similar situations in future.
  • Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)control says that this bill board was constructed without the permission from the government officials and it is considered as an illegal boarding and we will be taking the immediate actions on the owner of the hoarding .
  • The deputy cm Devendra Fadnavisraised his voice while speaking to media regarding the permissions  of the hoardings whether they are legal or not. If the hoarding near the petrol pump is illegal the severe actions will definitely taken.

Whats happening with the rescue team?

Rescue operations are expected to continue till today amd the teams of Mumbai police, civic body, fire brigade, NDRF, Mahanagar gas ltd, bharat petroleum corporation ltd, adani energy were involved in this process. Along with them municipal commissioners & administrators Shri. Bhushan gagrani, additional municipal commissioner (city) Dr. Ashwini Joshi, additional municipal commissioner(suburban) Dr. Sudhakar Shinde and all other concerned officials are personally present at the location and taking care of the related actions.National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said a total number of 75 people have been rescued since the incident and BMC are expecting there will be some more individuals that are trapped.
Recent news states that after the incident Bhavesh Binde, the owner of the advertising agency "ego media private limited" went missing and his phone is being switched off and his identity is untraceable at this point.

Why the police tracing his identity?

Bhavesh Prabhudas Bhinde of age 51 was the owner of the hoarding company that was collapsed in Mumbai. BMC states that he didn't took any permissions to install the hoarding near the petrol pump. As per the documents, a rape case and molestation case was filed against bhinde at the mulund police station this year on January 24, but he was bailed out by the highcourt. He has been charged under section 328 (putting hoarding without permission) and in latest FIR he was charged under section (304, 338,337, 34).

How are people responding to this tragedy?

  • Most of the people are raising their voice against BMC about how can such a big illegal hoarding being erected that too near petrol bunk.
  • Along with Bhavesh Binde, BMC officials should also be arrested for this illegal hoardings.
  • Celebrities like Vijay varma, mini mathur and actor sony razdan reacted to the situation by commenting on the posts and keeping the videos in the stories.
  • Sony razdan wrote under the post by faye that "but why do they only discover this illegal hoarding after its killed people?Isn't the @my_bmc therefore liable for prosecution in this case then? For not doing their due diligence before such a disaster takes place?"
  • Mini mathur in instagram story wrote "life in our country has zero value.Whose hoarding is it? Who allowed to stand there for years? The blame game this week lead to no answers and the corrupt nexas that allowed the open floating of rules will never be taken apart. Disgusting!"

The Government Railway Police (GRP) said that, they had received a letter from BMC recommending to take action against the advertiser to removal of hoarding. As they have initiated the proceeding against the advertising company but the tragedy occurred before they could take action.

Hence, the city that never sleeps completely lost its charm within a day due to the bad weather conditions and winds are blowing at the speed of 50-60 kmph at some places blowing the roofs and damage to trees were also seen. Orange alert has been assigned to  the nearby cities like pune, nashik, ahmednagar, Aurangabad etc.
