Story:
Ojas Gambheera, widely known as “OG” (Pawan Kalyan), was once the most feared and dominant figure in the criminal underworld of Mumbai. He served as the protector of a powerful family that controlled the city’s key assets.
Following a major, defining incident, OG mysteriously vanished from the city, leaving behind his life of violence and power to pursue a quiet existence.
Years later, a brutal and ambitious new gangster named Omi Bhau (Emraan Hashmi) has risen to take complete control of Mumbai, crushing all opposition and threatening the remnants of OG’s past life.
When Omi Bhau’s increasing ruthlessness and threats target the people OG once protected, The Original Gangster is forced out of retirement. He returns to Mumbai with a singular purpose: to confront and eliminate the new tyrant, Omi Bhau, and settle old scores.
The film follows OG’s blood-soaked mission of vengeance and redemption as he reignites a brutal criminal war to reclaim his place and protect his own.
The plot is essentially a classic gangster revenge/redemption drama, heavily focusing on style, mass action sequences, and the mystique surrounding Pawan Kalyan’s character. The film reportedly features multiple “Easter eggs” or connections to the director Sujeeth’s previous work, ‘Saaho’
Plus Points:
-
Pawan Kalyan’s comeback: This is vintage Power Star. His swag, body language, dialogue delivery, and screen presence are electrifying. Every frame is designed to make fans go wild.
-
Emraan Hashmi: The Bollywood actor makes a strong Telugu debut. His menacing performance as Omi Bhau elevates the hero–villain conflict. Their face-offs are a treat to watch.
-
Action sequences: Sujeeth delivers stylish, high-voltage action. Katana fights, shootouts, and slow-motion shots are executed with finesse.
-
Music & BGM: Thaman S lifts the film with pulsating background score. Songs like “Firestorm” and “Suvvi Suvvi” are already chartbusters.
-
Visuals: Cinematography by Ravi K. Chandran and Manoj Paramahamsa is top-notch. The film looks rich and grand throughout.
-
Mass moments: Interval bang and climax are handled superbly, giving fans whistle-worthy moments.
Minus Points:
-
Routine storyline: The gangster revenge template feels predictable. The narrative doesn’t offer many surprises.
-
Pace in parts: The romantic track with Priyanka Mohan, though sweet, slows the film’s tempo.
-
Violence factor: The raw, graphic violence may not appeal to all sections of the audience, especially families.
Technical Aspects:
-
Direction: Sujeeth focuses on style and hero elevation. He succeeds in presenting Pawan Kalyan in the most stylish, mass avatar in years. Compared to Saaho, the narration here is more rooted and clear.
-
Music: Thaman is a huge asset. His score creates goosebumps in many sequences.
-
Cinematography: World-class visuals enhance the gangster setup.
-
Editing: Crisp in most parts but could have been sharper in the love track.
-
Production values: DVV Entertainments has mounted the film on a massive scale. The quality is evident in every frame.
Verdict:
On the whole, They Call Him OG is a stylish mass action drama that marks a powerful comeback for Pawan Kalyan. His swag and charisma dominate the film, while Emraan Hashmi provides a strong villainous counter. Though the storyline is predictable and the violence may not suit all, the film scores high on action, music, and fan moments. For fans, it’s a festival. For others, it’s a well-made action entertainer worth watching on the big screen.
