In a strong rebuttal to allegations of Indian involvement in a purported plan to oust Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has categorically denied having any such discussions with Indian officials. Nasheed emphasized India’s democratic values and respect for the rule of law while dismissing claims of regime-change plotting.

The allegations originated from a report in The Washington Post referencing a document titled “Democratic Renewal Initiative.” The report claimed that the Maldivian Opposition had explored plans to bribe 40 Members of Parliament, including members of Muizzu’s party, and pay senior army and police officers to support an impeachment effort. The report stated that the plot failed to secure sufficient votes, and India chose not to proceed with or fund the scheme.

Nasheed Defends India’s Commitment to Democracy

Nasheed emphasized his two decades-long close relationship with the Indian government and institutions, asserting that India upholds democratic principles and mutual respect in its international engagements. He praised India’s approach, stating, “India respects the other point of view even when there is disagreement. It does not impose its perceptions and beliefs on other countries, political parties, or leaders.”

He also stressed that India’s priorities in the Maldives lie in strengthening democratic institutions and the economy, viewing these actions as beneficial for both nations.

MDP’s Relationship with India

Nasheed acknowledged the historical relationship between India and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which he co-founded. He noted that while the MDP leadership enjoys a strong rapport with India, it does not imply that India will acquiesce to all of the party’s requests.

“The MDP is the first democratic political party in the Maldives and the movement that brought democracy to the country. Therefore, it is understandable that MDP enjoys a healthy relationship with India,” he said, adding that India remains impartial when it comes to political requests.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Nasheed dismissed the idea of Indian involvement as a conspiracy theory. “India will not support such an action. They have always respected democracy in the Maldives. India has never dictated ways on us,” he wrote.

The Maldivian government, including President Muizzu’s office and the Maldives High Commission in New Delhi, has yet to respond to the allegations or the statements from Nasheed.

However, India’s approach has been grounded in non-interference, focusing instead on fostering stability and democratic governance. The latest allegations come at a time when the Maldives is navigating a delicate political landscape following President Muizzu’s recent election. Observers suggest that maintaining political stability and democratic norms will remain key to the country’s progress and its relationship with global partners like India.

Nasheed’s statements highlight the crucial role of transparency and trust in international relations, especially in a region with high geopolitical stakes.
