Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has officially entered the ground-up electric vehicle (EV) segment with the launch of its much-anticipated BE 6e and XEV 9e SUVs. These models, priced at ₹18.9 lakh and ₹21.9 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom), respectively, mark a major milestone in Mahindra’s journey towards electrification. Both vehicles are built on Mahindra’s INGLO platform, a dedicated architecture designed exclusively for electric mobility.
Compact Coupe-SUV with Futuristic Design
The BE 6e is Mahindra’s first compact-born electric vehicle (BEV), delivering a blend of style, performance, and practicality. This coupe-SUV has a sleek design with jewel-like headlights, a rear LED light bar, and 20-inch alloy wheels (on top variants) for an initial price of 18.9 lakh. Its proportions include a length of 4,371mm, a ground clearance of 207mm, and an impressive battery clearance of 218mm.
The BE 6e offers a spacious 455-litre boot along with a 45-litre frunk for additional storage. Inside, the cabin takes inspiration from fighter jets, with driver-centric controls resembling thrusters. Advanced tech dominates the interior, including multi-zone climate control, wireless charging, a panoramic sunroof, and AI-powered connected car technology.
Powertrain and Performance
The BE 6e is available with 59kWh and 79kWh battery pack options, delivering WLTP-certified ranges of up to 550km. The 79kWh variant packs a punch with 288bhp and 380Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100km/h sprint in just 6.7 seconds. Charging is swift, with the battery reaching 20-80% in 20 minutes using a 175 kW DC fast charger. Mahindra is offering a lifetime warranty on the battery pack for private registrations by first owners, a standout commitment in the segment.
Premium Option with Impressive Range
Priced at ₹21.9 lakh, the XEV 9e complements the BE 6e as a premium offering. It boasts a range of up to 656 km (ARAI-certified) and shares the same battery technology, leveraging LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cells. This ensures enhanced durability and safety, with fast-charging capabilities identical to the BE 6e.
Safety and Technology
Both SUVs prioritize safety and tech, featuring seven airbags, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), and a 360-degree camera. The BE 6e, in particular, uses an intricate wiring system comprising over 3 km of cables and 36 ECUs, highlighting its advanced engineering.
Strategic Positioning and Future Plans
Mahindra has strategically priced the BE 6e and XEV 9e to compete with top-selling mid and premium-ICE SUVs like the Hyundai Creta. By offering a more features set at competitive prices, Mahindra aims to capture a significant share of India’s growing EV market.
To support its EV ambitions, Mahindra is revamping its dealership network across major metros. Additionally, the company has allocated ₹4,500 crore from its ₹16,000 crore EV budget (FY22-FY27) for product development, technology advancements, and scaling production. By March 2025, Mahindra plans to produce 10,000 ground-up EVs annually at its Pune facility.
