It is good to know, after analyzing the situation across the US and Singapore, where the JN.1 strain is predominant among all strains, that it is always good we are vaccinated and JN.1 rate-of-infection is not even close to pandemic levels. It is now called a Variant of Interest, but poses low Risk, the World Health Organization (WHO) Says.

But we must be Vigilant and Educate ourselves and our loved ones about this strain.
JN.1 is COVID-19 variant. It is the descendant lineage of Omicron subvariant BA 2.86 known as Pirola. So, we can say that JN.1 is Pirola’s kid. The JN.1 spike protein by which it attaches its human body cells has undergone multiple mutations (changes), which is helping it easily bind and infect human cells.

Whenever any foreign pathogen- a virus, bacteria, etc, enters the human body, the human immune system attacks it. This Pirola kid JN.1 is escaping immunity and spreading fast because of spike protein antigenic variation. We must understand that JN.1 is the lineage of SARS-COV-2, an RNA virus and RNA viruses undergo higher mutation compared to DNA Viruses.

In the United States, and Singapore combined, thousands of people were hospitalized because of this strain. Many recovered and returned home. Adults are prone to infection more than youth because of less strong immune levels. So, it is always advisable to get a booster dose if possible.

SARS-COV-2 JN.1 causes upper respiratory tract infections with fever and sore throat accompanied by it. Infected individuals may also experience a runny nose, headaches and mild gastrointestinal symptoms.

The hallmark mutation L455S in spike protein and three other mutations in non-spike proteins are helping it evade the human immune system effectively.

The Bayesian Multinomial Logistic Model used to count data has found that compared to other variants effective reproductive number of JN.1 is higher.

It is of utmost importance for us to wear masks in infected areas, eat healthy, stay healthy, and stop worrying.

We are better prepared than ever for the enemy, and we will fight it together!
