India has taken a significant leap in its defence aviation capabilities with the unveiling of a full-scale engineering model of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) at Aero India 2025 in Bengaluru. Showcased at the India Pavilion, this marks the first public display of India’s indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in defence technology.
The AMCA, developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), is a twin-engine, multi-role stealth fighter designed to meet the operational needs of the Indian Air Force (IAF). Weighing 25 tons, the aircraft is engineered with state-of-the-art technology, making it one of the most advanced fighters in its category.
Some of its standout features include:
- AI-Powered Electronic Pilot – Enhances situational awareness and assists in complex combat scenarios.
- Netcentric Warfare Systems – Enables real-time coordination and data-sharing in battle.
- Internal Weapon Bay – Enhances stealth capabilities by reducing radar cross-section.
- Integrated Vehicle Health Management – Facilitates predictive maintenance to minimize downtime.
With these cutting-edge technologies, the AMCA is set to rival contemporary fifth-generation fighter jets, positioning India among the world’s leading air combat forces.
Artificial Intelligence Integration
One of the most groundbreaking aspects of the AMCA is its deep integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The AI-powered Electronic Pilot will not only automate crucial functions but also provide real-time threat identification, enhanced decision-making capabilities, and seamless coordination with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). These advancements will ensure that the AMCA remains a step ahead in modern air combat.
The unveiling of the AMCA at Aero India 2025 is a significant milestone in India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. By developing an indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter, India reduces dependence on foreign military aircraft and strengthens its defence manufacturing sector. The program also paves the way for enhanced defence exports, boosting India’s position in the global arms market.
International Presence at Aero India 2025
This year’s Aero India event has attracted significant international participation, particularly from the United States, which has showcased an array of advanced aircraft and defence technologies.
Key highlights include:
- F-16 and F-35 Fighter Jets—Demonstrating the latest advancements in air combat technology.
- KC-135 Stratotanker – Highlighting aerial refueling capabilities.
- B-1 Bomber – Showcasing long-range strike potential.
More than two dozen American defense companies are engaging with Indian counterparts to explore potential collaborations in aviation and military technology. Senior US officials, including US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Jorgan Andrews and General Kevin Schneider, Commander of the US Pacific Air Forces, are leading the American delegation.
The growing partnership between the United States and India in defence cooperation has been evident since Aero India 2023. Over the past two years, both nations have expanded their collaboration in key areas such as cybersecurity, logistics, and maritime security.
General Schneider emphasised the importance of this partnership, stating:
“Aero India 2025 is an ideal forum to showcase US defence aircraft and equipment, ultimately contributing to greater compatibility and interoperability between our nations.”
Apart from cutting-edge defence technology, Aero India 2025 also brings a cultural element to the event. The United States Air Force Band of the Pacific, with its 10-member ensemble, Final Approach, is set to perform for the public on February 13 and 14. Additionally, a special musical performance will take place at Christ University in Bengaluru.
The unveiling of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) at Aero India 2025 marks a defining moment in India’s journey toward self-reliance in defence technology. With advanced AI-driven features, stealth capabilities, and next-generation combat readiness, AMCA positions India firmly in the elite league of fifth-generation fighter jet developers.
Meanwhile, the strong presence of international defence players, particularly from the United States, underscores India’s growing significance in the global defence ecosystem. As Aero India 2025 unfolds, it is set to be a platform for groundbreaking innovations, international collaborations, and a testament to India’s commitment to advancing its aerospace capabilities.
