The Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, to address the grave issues of student suicide cases, fire incidents at coaching facilities, lack of facilities, exorbitant fees, and lacklustre methodologies of teaching adopted at private coaching centers, have released strict guidelines to ensure the educational, financial, and mental well-being of students and families with holistic growth of students at the coaching centers.
These guidelines are framed to ensure the quality of education at private coaching centers and student well-being. Now with these guidelines, whether students succeed or fail in their examinations, their well-being remains the topmost objective of any coaching center. It is noteworthy that in the direction of educational reforms, India has already passed National Educational Policy 2020, which is effective from the academic year 2023–24 and focuses on developing students’ cognitive skills and soft skills, including cultural awareness and empathy, that will develop future generations with greater human values that are diminishing day by day in the world.
False Promises of Coaching Centers
Living up to the expectations of the parents is always a tough job in a student’s journey. The coaching centers that are running with false promises of 100% success records are blindly believed by parents without understanding their child’s capabilities and interests. The Indian government, in its new guidelines for private coaching centers, mandates every registered coaching center to conduct admissions or mock tests for every student to assess their capabilities. Based on student capabilities and interests, the coaching center should convey realistic expectations to their parents and also suggest a way forward.
These private coaching centers are also instructed not to enrol any students under the age of 16 and require every tutor to be graduated. They should charge a fee that is fair and reasonable, and all the information about the coaching center must be transparent on their website and in any material they publish. Every coaching center is instructed to only conduct classes for 5 hours per day and must have a week off. No examination must be conducted after a holiday.
Students and parents can now easily exit the coaching center if they don’t like it. The fee should only be collected during the term student stays at the coaching center or the hostel, and the remaining amount must be refunded on a pro-rata basis in 10 days.
The most important thing is the student’s physical and mental well-being. Indian government instructed private coaching centers to have student counsellors and psychiatrists at their centers to help students with distress and stop any inadvertent incidents like suicide. The infrastructure must be top-notch, and under no circumstances should the safety measures of the building be ignored, CCTV has to be installed and fire safety measures be taken.
The coaching center now must ensure the holistic development of the students. Students’ emotional bonding and mental well-being are prioritized and taught fundamental duties as a citizen.
These guidelines are another step in making education affordable, holistic, value-based, and inclusive. A right step in the right direction, we can say.
