He converted his country into one-party rule led by his communist party, the first communist government in the West.

Called a "Dear Leader" by North Koreans, Kim Jon II was a skilled and crafty diplomat. He was a crucial force in implementing the "Sunshine Policy" with his South Korean counterpart Kim Dae-jung to improve North and South Korean relations.
