Amazon India witnessed an impressive increase in sales of premium products during its Annual Great Indian Festival (AGIF) 2024, indicating a shift in consumer preference toward higher-end goods across various categories. The festive sale, which began on September 27, recorded robust demand for premium items such as large-screen televisions, smartphones, and major home appliances. Saurabh Srivastava, Vice President of Amazon India, shared insights with PTI, highlighting a “clear trend of premiumization” across categories, from electronics to beauty and fashion.

Premium Products Lead the Charge

One of the most notable patterns observed during AGIF 2024 was the surge in premium product sales across a wide range of categories, underscoring a growing consumer appetite for quality and luxury items. Tablets from top brands like Apple and Samsung exemplified this trend, with Amazon reporting a 10-times growth in Apple iPad sales and a five-times growth in Samsung tablet purchases compared to the previous year. These figures reflect an increased willingness among Indian consumers to invest in high-quality tech products.

The premiumization trend extended beyond metropolitan areas, with Srivastava noting that even customers in smaller towns and cities were opting for high-end products. “People are preferring more premium products. This is not limited to just top cities,” Srivastava said.

High-End Electronics and Appliances in High Demand

Large-screen televisions were among the most sought-after items during the festival. They contributed to roughly 30 percent of total TV unit sales, with demand for large-screen models from brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Sony increasing tenfold year-on-year. Srivastava attributed this growth to the rising preference for immersive viewing experiences.

The appetite for premium home appliances also surged. Products such as front-load washing machines, side-by-side refrigerators, and high-capacity air conditioners (greater than 1.5 tons) experienced a 30 percent year-on-year growth. These high-end appliances are increasingly being chosen by consumers looking to upgrade their homes with durable, feaure-rich models that offer enhanced convenience and performance.

Fashion and Beauty Segment Records Remarkable Growth

Amazon’s fashion and beauty categories saw some of the most dramatic increases in premium product sales, recording a 400 percent surge across items such as watches, fragrances, handbags, Korean beauty products, jewelry, and luggage. This substantial rise in demand underscores the growing inclination of Indian consumers towards luxury personal care and fashion items, particularly during the festive season.

Customer Engagement

The Great Indian Festival 2024 set new records for Amazon India in terms of customer engagement. Srivastava reported a 20 percent increase in the number of customers visiting the platform during the sale period compared to the previous year. Amazon India recorded 1.4 billion customer visits, the highest ever for the platform, with over 85 percent of these customers hailing from non-metro areas. This highlights the expansion of e-commerce into India’s smaller cities, where the convenience and variety offered by platforms like Amazon are attracting a growing user base.

B2B Growth and Seller Success

Amazon Business also saw a significant boost, with 50 percent year-on-year growth in B2B customers making their first purchases. The AGIF 2024 provided a fruitful period for sellers on the platform, with over 70 percent more sellers surpassing ₹1 crore in sales compared to the previous year.

In line with the high volume of orders, Amazon India bolstered its fast delivery capabilities, delivering over 3 crore products to Prime members within the same or next day a 26 percent increase from the previous year. Additionally, 70 percent of Prime members who shopped during AGIF 2024 were from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, up from 60 percent the previous year, indicating deeper penetration of Amazon’s premium services in smaller towns and cities.

The Amazon Great Indian Festival 2024 showcased a clear shift in consumer preferences toward premium products across multiple categories, driven by a desire for quality, technology, and luxury. This trend, coupled with Amazon’s expanded reach and logistical capabilities, underscores the platform’s pivotal role in transforming India’s e-commerce landscape.
